News, Sports

First of all, congratulations to Rafael Nadal on winning his first Wimbledon title.

Congratulations to Roger Federer too on playing a great match.

Rafael Nadal, the Spaniard, defeated the defending champion, the Swiss, Roger Federer in a epic five setter, which also is the longest Men’s singles final at 4 hours 48 minutes at Wimbledon by 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 in the finals of the Wimbledon at the centre court.

He makes history as he becomes only the first player after Byorn Borg to have won both, French Open and Wimbledon in the same year,2008. Federer was also chasing history to become the only player to have won 6 consecutive Wimbledon titles from 2003-2007. But his reign has finally ended. The rivalry has now been taken to a new level by Nadal who leads 12:6 head-to-head with Roger Federer.

Talking of the match, well it was a spectacle which can only be believed if you saw it. The first two sets saw  Federer thinking he was still playing on clay of Roland Garros, forgetting that this was grass, his home, his turf. He was far from his best and lost the two sets easily to the booming forehand winners of Nadal. Federer’s fans(including me) from all over the world watched the world number one slipping away on grass in disbelief. Could have been strainght sets win for Nadal had there not been any rain.In the third set,the play was stopped because of rain. And that, may be gave Federer to re-think,re-group,re-focus. A class of student Roger by Madam Mirka Vavrinec, his fiancee? But the delay broke the momentum. Federer won the third set in the tie break.

In the fourth set, both player(Federer too joined Nadal) played lovely tennis. The set was again stretched to tie break and Federer won the set after being 5-2 down at one stage, another instance when one thought the match will now go Rafa’s way.

The decider was a treat, watching both the champions literally battle it out to hang on to their serves. Another delay due to rain was at the score of 2-2.Federer served big when his served was challenged, except for that one time while at 7-7, which gave Nadal 8-7 lead on his own serve to serve out the match.

Both players, specially Nadal covered ground very well. He dint give up on any point till the point was actually over.He ran like a rabbit. And ofcourse his big, booming forehand. That was just sheer power.

The one thing that helped Federer was his serve. He served great when it was needed, hitting 25 aces against Nadal’s 6. Also Nadal’s serving in the final game was amazing stuff i thought.Serving wide and not giving Roger enough chance to have enough part of his racket behind the ball. The unforced error at 52 (against Nadal’s 27)for federer hurt him the most.

What a match. It was an epic battle having every element that could be incorporated in a tennis match.Power play of Nadal, elegance and class of federer.Heart stopping moments.Breathtaking passes and angles they created out of no-where.Emotions,drama,power.All in all a perfect script. High voltage stuff. It was the best mtach i have ever seen, for sure.

Roger will have to find a way quickly to get past Nadal because he stands in his way of equalling 14 grand slam titles record of Pete Sampras.Federer currently has 12. Well Nadal has just shown to the whole world that he is not just all clay! He now has 5 Grand slam titles,4 French and one Wimbledon. God bless that bulging left biceps. He produces so much power thats hard to match, even for Roger Federer on grass. His never say die attitude is what makes every point so intense. He can make unbelievable passes even when he is not positioned right or even when he is slightly off balance just trying to pull the ball back in play.

As a Federer fan,i would like to share my experience of the match. When he was lost second set after leading 4-1, i almost had tears in my eyes. Then on i was thinking what i would write in this blog post. How bad Federer surrendered, quite like his loss at French Open final? I could not help myself from hoping of a miracle,a comeback from Roger. I thought to myself is that all he can do against Nadal? I gave him all the luck i had, gave him all the luck of my bitch and even asked my girlfriend to give him all the luck she has to him. I kept praying on every break point he had. Never during the course of the whole match my heart beat normally. I wished some how he can win that third set. Was shivering very mildly on crucial points after the third set. I dont know how would i have consoled myself had Federer lost that third set because now that i know the result, and admiring how well he fought i still cant get over it. I still cant believe he lost.I still have the moments of that match haunting me. Why oh why? Why did he have to lose? He could have won. How could he lose after such a fight? After hitting 25 aces? Its hard to believe and digest. Time will heal it though. You know what i want? Roger:winner at Roland garros,2009.  Its good though that he dint lose in three sets. It gave us(Roger fans) a reason to cheer up.

Greatest match ever? Hell ya, if you ask me,but you obviously can differ. Though Borg and McEnroe final comes close but this one was above everything. It was my pleasure to watch the match, though on a tv screen.

Thank you both for such a great final.Dream final,it loved to its expectations.
