Emergency imposed in Pakistan.Where is it heading

Sat, Nov 3, 2007

International, News

In a shocking and unexpected development,General Parvez Musharraf has imposed a state of emergency in Pakistan.

The constitution has been suspended and a new temporary constitution has been put in place.
Chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has been sacked along with the others judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts. All the judges will be re-sworn.
The Supreme Court has straight away rejected the emergency.
All private news channels have been taken off air.

There were three justifications given for this incident:
1. Increasing terrorism.
2. “Too much” interference by judiciary.
3. Some judges doing “over the limit” acts.

Mind you, this emergency has happened just happened ahead of a very crucial decision coming from Supreme court whether General can contest for Presidency if he is the millitary chief.

So where is Pakistan heading?
Martial law?
Are the hopes of democracy again gone?

What will be the reaction of people of Pakistan to this desperate move by Musharraf?

Only time will tell.
