Platypus is a bird,a reptile, & a mammal

Arguably the oddest beast in Nature’s menagerie, the platypus looks as it if were assembled from spare parts left over after the animal kingdom was otherwise complete.

Now scientists know why. According to a study released Wednesday, the egg-laying critter is a genetic potpourri — part bird, part reptile and part lactating mammal.

The task of laying bare the platypus genome of 2.2 billion base pairs spread across 18,500 genes has taken several years, but will do far more than satisfy the curiosity of just biologists, say the researchers.

“The platypus genome is extremely important, because it is the missing link in our understanding of how we and other mammals first evolved,” [Read the rest of this entry…]

Physicists Create Universe Smaller Than a Marble

At Lancaster University, they
’re unraveling the secrets of how to build a universe. In fact, they have already formed one, or something very much like it. This scientific breakthrough lies in the bottom of a chamber no larger than your pinky finger, filled with helium and cooled to 0.0003 degrees Fahrenheit above absolute zero.
By placing helium in a state which most closely resembles the form it held at the beginning of the universe, scientists have created an opportunity for the gas to go through several low-energy evolutions. These defects in space-time, are represented by tiny whirlpools in the helium, which are created by the rapid expansion, and equally rapid slowing of the expansion; something that it’s believed our own universe did at the big bang and in the moments thereafter. Youtube India launched

Youtube has just launched a site having an “Indian lens” for the Indian audience.

The site is at www.youtube.in or www.in.youtube.com.

Here is an excerpt from the Youtube India blog:

We're very happy to be able to bring you a localised version of YouTube
for India, its diaspora and really anyone who is passionate about
India. This site contains all the videos found on YouTube’s global site,
www.youtube.com, except we’ve applied an “Indian lens” to the content,
meaning that the video charts you see reflect what Indians are watching
now, the featured videos are programmed to cater to an Indian audience,
and we’ve signed up dozens of local partners who are proud to”
distribute their content through YouTube.”

India tests Agni III

India on Wednesday test fired the spearhead of its missile programme, Agni III, a nuclear capable Intermediate Range Ballistic missile(IRBM) that can strike upto 3500kms.The missile was fired from Wheeler Island off Orissa coast at 9.56am.

It was the third successful test of the missile which is expected to be given to army by 2009.It gives India a realistic nuclear deterrence against China, as the missile is capable of striking targets as far as Beijing and Shanghai.

The success will boost the moral of Indian scientists wanting to develop an Intercontinental Range Ballistic Missile (ICBM).

Good luck!
